Jovanka Houska (born June 10, 1980 in London ) is an English chess player and received the title of Women's Grand Master (WGM) from FIDE in 2000 and the title of International Master (IM) in 2005 .

In 1990 Jovanka Houska was third in the U10 youth world championship for girls in Fond du Lac . After many other successes, Jovanka Houska won the bronze medal at the European Youth Championship for girls under 20 in 1998. The following year she was awarded the title of International Women's Champion (WIM). She achieved her first WGM standard at the British Championship in 1999, when she was still a teenager. In 2000 she won the European U20 Girls' Championship in Avilés ahead of Viktorija Čmilytė . From 2008 to 2012 she won the British Women's Championship five times in a row, and she won further titles from 2016 to 2019.

Despite her studies, she took part in many international team competitions. She took part with the English women's selection in every Chess Olympiad between 1998 in Elista and 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk and again in the 2014 Chess Olympiad . From 1999 to 2011 , she was also at all European Women's Team Championships for England, where she won a bronze medal with her team in 2001. In 2015 and 2017 she again took part in the women's team championship and in 2015 achieved the second-best individual result on the top board.

Houska played in the German Federal Chess League in the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons at SV 1920 Hofheim . In the women's Bundesliga she played for SK Holsterhausen from 1999 to 2003 and for the Karlsruhe Chess Friends in the 2011/12 and 2015/16 seasons . In the British Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) Jovanka Houska played for Slough from 1993 to 2004 (although she also played a game for Na Fianna in the 1995/96 season and was not used at all in the 1999/2000 season). Houska also took part in the 1997 European Women's Club Cup with Slough . From 2005 to 2008 she played for the Hilsmark Kingfisher , with whom she also participated twice in the European Club Cup , since 2008 for the Wood Green Hilsmark Kingfisher , which was created through the merger of the Hilsmark Kingfisher with Wood Green and again since the 2018/19 season compete as Wood Green . Jovanka Houska won the 4NCL in 1996 , 1999 and 2009 . In France, Houska plays at Club de L'Echiquier Deauvillais and played with them in the top division in the 2009/10 and 2011/12 seasons (2009/10 in the top 16 , 2011/12 in the top 12 ). Jovanka Houska has played in the Norwegian Eliteserien since 2009 for the Bergens Schakklub .

In June 2019 she was in first place in the English women's ranking, ahead of Harriet Hunt . Her older brother Miroslav (* 1978) is also an international champion.
