In 1982 an interzonal tournament for women took place in Bad Kissingen . It served to determine the participants for the subsequent Candidates Tournament for the Women's World Chess Championship 1984 . The 1984 World Cup, at which Maia Chiburdanidze defended her title, took place in Volgograd . Another interzonal tournament for qualifying for the candidates tournament was held in Tbilisi , the interzonal tournament Tbilisi 1982 , which was won by Margareta Mureșan .

In Bad Kissingen, 16 participants played a round-robin tournament from July 9th to August 1st . Nona Gaprindashvili , who had been chess world champion from 1962 to 1978, prevailed and qualified for the candidates' tournament, as did Lydyja Semenova . The vice world champion Nana Alexandria was already set for the candidates tournament and did not have to take part in Bad Kissingen.

The host was the German Chess Federation in conjunction with the Kurhotel 2002 . Lutz Ebbinghaus acted as the main referee. The event was organized by Horst Metzing and Notker Rutishauser. The patron was Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhart Baum . The German women were looked after by national coach Sergiu Samarian , who was also the editor of the bulletin.

Barbara Hund wrote a detailed report with a picture, table and two annotated games in her book entitled My Path to Success . The magazine Schach-Magazin 64 published a report with the final score, games, pictures and a portrait of the first German women's grandmaster Barbara Hund.
