In the 1976/78 world championship cycle, two women's interzonal tournaments were held for the first time . One took place in November / December 1976 in Roosendaal and the second tournament at the same time as an interzonal tournament in 1976 in Tbilisi .

The first two in Roosendaal (Elena Akhmilovskaya and Alla Kuschnir) were directly qualified for the women's candidates' tournament. The next two placed had to play a play-off, whereby Tatjana Lematschko remained victorious with 4½: 3½ and qualified for the candidates' tournament.

Together with the three qualifiers from the Tbilisi interzonal tournament in 1976 , the candidate fights were held in 1977 and 1978, which 17-year-old Maia Tschiburdanidze won in Bad Kissingen in January 1978 .
