Eduard (Esra) Glass (born June 28, 1902 in Stanislau ; died June 13, 1981 in Vienna ) was an Austrian chess player .

Life

Glass won the first "Viennese valuation tournament" in 1927 and was "shared first" with Erich Eliskase's Austrian chess master in Innsbruck in 1929 . He took part in the Leopold Trebitsch Memorial tournaments in Vienna several times . Glass played for Austria in 1933 at the 5th Chess Olympiad in Folkestone . In April 1935 he was split 4th – 5th. in Tel Aviv at the second Maccabiade . He was split 8-10. in Budapest in 1936. Glass won the first Vienna City Championship in 1936 with 11 out of 12 and 2.5 points ahead of Simon Rubinstein and Grünspan. Remarkably, these top three winners all belonged to the Jewish club SC Hakoah Vienna .

After Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938, Glass was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp because of his Jewish origins . There he won a camp chess championship before Georg Klaus . Glass later fled to China, where he survived World War II in the Shanghai ghetto . In 1951 he took part in the first Israeli chess championship and took 3rd place with 8 out of 13 possible points (the winner was Menachem Oren with 9 points). Even after that, Glass took part in many chess tournaments. For example, he was 15th in Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) in 1959 and fifth in Reggio nell'Emilia in 1960/61. At the Austrian state championships Esra Glass took second place in 1969 (behind Karl Röhrl ) and in 1973 tied with Röhrl, shared second place behind Karl Janetschek.
