The St. Georg Clinic traces its 800-year history back to the St. Georg Hospital, which was founded in 1212.

See the main article on this and its history: Hospital St. Georg (Leipzig)

At the beginning of the 20th century, Leipzig needed a new hospital due to the drastic increase in population. On January 8, 1908, the city council decided to build a hospital on the northern edge of the city that would meet the needs of the city. The new hospital was to be called the St. Georg Hospital and thus tie in with the tradition of the St. Georg Hospital.

Austerity measures prevented the full implementation of the original development plan. So only part of the planned twelve bed houses was built. The construction of a chapel and an X-ray institute also fell victim to the financial cuts.

In a five-year construction period, a large hospital facility was built on an area of 214,710 square meters in the pavilion style that was current for hospital buildings at the time , according to plans by Leipzig's city building director Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg . The St. Georg Hospital was opened on May 26, 1913. 980 beds were available in seven ward blocks. 28 doctors and 193 nurses worked in the departments for internal medicine and surgery, a pathological-bacteriological institute (head: Adolf Reinhardt) and a hospital pharmacy (head: Richard Vörkel). The first medical director was the internist Oskar Wandel , and the head of the surgical department was Arthur Läwen , who established the important scientific traditions of the new St. Georg Hospital.

From 1914 to 1919, the house had to take on the tasks of a military hospital in addition to its civilian duties, with almost 12,000 wounded being treated. In 1920 Ernst Heller took over the management of the surgical department, which was to last 29 years and which gave the house a national and international reputation. In the years that followed, the house's capacity was expanded as well as temporary declines due to the global economic crisis . In 1938 the hospital again had 1,240 beds. In the Second World War , hospital operations took place again.

In 1945 the Soviet military administration in Germany took over the hospital, which also had the effect that in 1948 the first municipal polyclinic in Leipzig was built in the St. Georg Hospital . Carly Seyfarth , who headed the internal department from 1929 to 1950, developed the hospital into a leading institution in the fight against infectious diseases after 1945. From 1951 new clinic areas and institutes were established, and Franz Mörl , from 1949 to 1956 the successor to Ernst Heller in surgery, and Josef Keller played a key role in shaping them. In 1956, St. Georg became the St. Georg District Hospital .

The district institute for blood donation and transfusion was established in 1964 , the neurological clinic in 1966 , the GDR children's dialysis center in Abtnaundorf Palace in 1967 , the clinic for anesthesiology and intensive therapy and the medical college in 1969, and the district laboratory for clinical chemistry in 1970 . From the mid-1970s, the renovation of the hospital complex in need of overhaul began slowly by dividing up the huge hospital rooms, installing modern kitchens in the individual houses and building a modern polyclinic.

In 1991 the name was changed to the St. Georg Municipal Hospital . In the years that followed, the entire hospital was gradually renovated from the ground up and new buildings were added. Other medical facilities were integrated in the Leipzig area, such as the municipal women's clinic in Eitingonstrasse (now various social facilities), the Hubertusburg specialist hospital , the Robert Koch Clinic in Robert Koch Park in Leipzig- Grünau , the Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry in Leipzig- Dosen and ambulance companies with the area of drug help. In 2006 the company was restructured into the St. Georg group of companies .

The St. Georg group of companies

After the restructuring in 2006, the St. Georg group of companies consists of the St. Georg gGmbH Clinic, the municipal owned clinic “St. Georg “Leipzig and five subsidiaries (including the Hubertusburg Specialist Hospital in Wermsdorf , specializing in psychiatry and psychotherapy, neurology and neurological intensive care medicine, and until 2020 pediatrics were also offered). The municipal clinic mainly takes on tasks for the city of Leipzig. Measured in terms of specialization and the severity of the disease, the medical services range from standard to maximum care, with around 75% of the nationwide standard care. The remaining 25% are used to cover specialized and highly specialized treatment measures.

The group of companies currently has around 1,700 beds and day clinics in the hospital sector , in the penal system (in dozen ), in rehabilitation and in the field of medical and social dormitories, in emergency sleeping places and overnight accommodation. Around 43,000 inpatients and day-care patients are treated annually. The annual average of inpatient operations is 17,000. The number of outpatient operations is 2200 and the trend is rising.
