Günter Lein

Günter Lein (born February 22, 1932 in Leipzig ) is a former German athlete from the German Democratic Republic (GDR), who was three times GDR high jump champion in the 1950s .

In 1954, with second place behind Walter Meier , Lein achieved the first place among the top three at GDR championships. From 1955 to 1957, Lein won the title three times. In 1958 and 1959 he took second place behind Werner Pfeil , in 1960 he came third behind Pfeil and Gerd Dührkop . In 1955, Lein finished ninth at the UIE Sports Weeks, the Universiade of the Eastern Bloc; In 1957 he jumped to fourth place with 2.01 m.

From 1.92 m in 1955 to 2.04 m, Lein jumped eleven GDR records and on June 1, 1957 was the first high jumper from the GDR to overcome the height of 2.00 m. His jumps of 2.02 m, 2.03 m and 2.04 m in 1957 were all German records. On June 7, 1958, Werner Pfeil replaced Lein as a GDR record holder and an all-German record holder.

Lein began his career at BSG Empor Lindenau and won his championship title for SC Rotation Leipzig . Lein was a trained technical draftsman, but studied at the DHfK and after his career worked as a trainer.
