Career as a soccer player

SC Lok Leipzig

When Gase was appointed to the squad of the GDR junior national team in the summer of 1956, the SC Lokomotive Leipzig was his home club. With the GDR juniors he played 13 international matches until 1958, in which he was usually used as a right winger. He did not achieve goals. In 1958, at the age of 18, he was used for the first time in the GDR league with SC Lok. He replaced the previous regular attacker Werner Walther , who had been injured over the long term. Gase played his first league game on August 17, 1958 in the Leipzig local derby of the 15th match day SC Rotation - SC Lok (2-4), in which he was used as a right striker. Up to the last day of the game he played all the following point games and came in his first league season on eleven missions, in which he scored three goals. He was also called up in the 1958 cup final SC Einheit Dresden - SC Lok (2: 1 a.s.), where he played on the position of the half right attacker. He was also used in the two trade fair cup games of the 1958/60 season against the Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (1: 6, 1: 0) in the Leipzig city team. Gase remained a regular in the attack by SC Lok Leipzig until the end of the 1962/63 season. From 1959 to 1960 he was part of the GDR junior national team, for which he played five international matches. When SC Lok was dissolved in the summer of 1963, Gase had 122 league point games and 12 championship goals on his account.

SC Leipzig

After the end of the 1962/63 season, Leipzig club football was reorganized and continued in the SC Leipzig and in the BSG Chemie Leipzig . The supposedly best players from the two disbanded clubs were sent to the football section of the SC, including Werner Gase. Even under the new coach Rudolf Krause , he had a regular place again, but was converted into a left winger during the 1963/64 season. Of the 26 games played in the league, he played 20 games and with his four goals was one of the most accurate SCL players. The season ended with a surprise, because Chemie Leipzig, the so-called “rest of Leipzig” won the championship, while the highly traded SC Leipzig only came in third. Gase had already missed the last three league games and was not used at all in the following season 1964/65.

1. FC Lok Leipzig

At the beginning of the 1965/66 season, in the course of which the SCL football section was transferred to 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, Gase was back in the game from the 1st matchday and played under the new coach Günter Konzack until the 14th matchday ten league point games. He played alternately as a left winger and a center forward. He then fell out again for a longer period, in 1966/67 he was only used three times in the league. In the 1967/68 season Gase reappeared in the first division squad of 1. FC Lok. From the 3rd matchday on he replaced the no longer ready for action center forward Dieter Engelhardt and came to the end of the season on 21 league appearances, but without scoring. At the beginning of the 1968/69 season, Gase was 28 years old. Coach Hans Studener had removed him from the league line-up and Gase was only used as a substitute in three league games. At the end of the season, 1. FC Lok was determined to be relegated from the league and Gase ended his career as a competitive athlete. After he had played another 57 league games for SC Leipzig and 1. FC Lok, the number of appearances in the top division had increased to 179, and his goal account had risen to 18. He also played 17 European Cup games.
