Athletic career

Young players

In 1973, the almost nine-year-old Lahn was accepted into the children's soccer team of the Vorwärts army sports community in Groß Glienicke near Potsdam. He played there until 1978 and then moved to 1. FC Union Berlin. After he had already played an international match with the GDR youth national team, he was part of the GDR junior national team from 1982 to 1983, for which he played 13 international junior matches. He made his international debut on August 3, 1982 in the encounter between the GDR and Finland (1: 1) as a striker. In most international matches, however, he was used in the left midfield. He scored his only international goal on February 24, 1982 in a 4-0 victory over Poland.

1. FC Union Berlin

At the age of 18 he was already part of the first division squad of 1. FC Union for the 1982/83 season. He made his debut in the elite league on August 28, 1982 in the Berlin local derby BFC Dynamo - 1. FC Union (4-0), when he came on in the 54th minute. Coach Harry Nippert then used him at irregular intervals until the end of the season in 14 other league games, in which he was mostly in the starting line-up as a left midfielder. Although he was also nominated for the major league for the 1983/84 season, the 1.70 m tall Lahn only came on as a substitute on the 19th matchday and only played six first division games. At the end of the season Union rose from the league. Also in the GDR league season 1984/85 Lahn had a difficult start under the new coach Karl Schäffner . It was not until matchday 14 that he was used more or less regularly, but only played 20 of the 34 point games. After Union Berlin had managed to return to the league immediately, Lahn, who had meanwhile started studying sports, was unable to secure a regular place in the Union team. In the three league seasons from 1985 to 1988 he only made 33 appearances in a total of 78 point games. However, he was with Union on May 31, 1986 for 56 minutes in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which Union with Lahn as the left midfielder lost 1: 5 against 1. FC Lok Leipzig. After 92 competitive games, including 55 league games with one goal, Lahn left 1. FC Union Berlin in the summer of 1988 and joined the GDR league team Motor Ludwigsfelde for the 1988/89 season . There he had a regular place as a midfielder and only missed four of the 34 point games.

Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt

For the 1989/90 season Lahn moved to the league promoted steel Eisenhüttenstadt. In his first season for steel, he played 20 league games in midfield, but nine of them over the entire game. After the Eisenhüttenstadt newcomers had claimed relegation, Lahn came in the top division season 1990/91 to 23 missions again as a midfielder. After four games as a substitute, apart from five match days, he had a regular place as a midfielder. At the end of the season, Lahn was again with steel in a final and the GDR soccer cup . This time he was only a substitute from the 66th minute and lost again with his team, now 0: 1 against champions Hansa Rostock. After that, Lahn no longer appeared in higher-class football.
