Dirk Koenen (born September 23, 1960 in East Berlin ) is a former soccer player who played for 1. FC Union Berlin in the Oberliga , the top division of the GDR soccer association, in the 1980s .

From the age of ten Koenen played in the school team of the East Berlin company sports community Post . In 1974 the BSG delegated him to 1. FC Union Berlin. After he had gone through the youth and the junior team, he was accepted into the squad for the junior league in 1978. In the same year he was part of the extended squad of the junior national team, but due to protracted injuries he was not used in international matches. During this time he completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic.

GDR League and Oberliga

When the first Union team was relegated in 1980, Koenen was incorporated into the district league team Union II. For the 1981/82 season he came as a defender in the squad of the first team that still played in the GDR league . The 1.85 m tall Koenen made his debut in the first team at the 2nd GDR League matchday on August 29, 1981 in the Union Berlin - Chemie PCK Schwedt encounter [2: 0]. This season, Union managed to return to the league in the second attempt. Koenen was involved in this success with 23 of 30 games. In his first league season 1982/83 he immediately moved up to the starting line-up and played 18 point games as a defender. At the end of the first half of the season, his coach Harry Nippert judged him : “Dirk is a very reliable, very disciplined player who knows how to implement a given tactical task quite properly.” Koenen remained a defender of the football club until 1986, after being relegated in 1984 he had to but again spend a season in the GDR league. In 1985/86 he had his most league games with 25 appearances and also played all nine games in the GDR Cup competition 1985/86. The ninth game was the final, but Union lost 5-1 to 1. FC Lok Leipzig with Koenen as central defender. Koenen played his last competitive game for 1. FC Union on September 13, 1986 in the match on the 5th Bundesliga match day BFC Dynamo - Union (8: 1). He was substituted after the first half. In November 1986 he was drafted into the army for a year and a half and during this time he played in the third-class district league Neubrandenburg with the army sports community Vorwärts Fünfeichen .

End of career

In May 1988 Koenen returned to 1. FC Union Berlin, but was no longer used in the first team. In early September 1988, the club announced the following to Koenen, who had played 137 competitive games from 1981 to 1986, including 67 league games: "In the interest of further performance development, Dirk Koenen (28) was delegated to BSG KWO Berlin." The BSG Kabelwerk Oberspree was newly promoted to the GDR league and kept Koenen until the end of the 1988/89 season. Koenen then moved again to a newcomer to the GDR league, BSG Chemie Velten , located north of Berlin. Koenen ended his career as a competitive athlete with the Berlin regional league team Adlershofer BC , to which he switched in 1992. He then worked as a trainer at Adlershof BC II and until 2004 at Sportfreunde Johannisthal .
