Volker Großmann (born September 2, 1953 - † November 26, 2015 in Pleinfeld ) was a German football player. From 1976 to 1982 he played for 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football . In 1981 he won the GDR soccer cup with 1. FC Lok .

Athletic career

Until 1972, Volker Großmann played with the army sports community Vorwärts in Wolfen in the third-class district league and then for the ASG Vorwärts Löbau in the second-class GDR league . There he was called up as a defender in all 44 league games within two seasons up to the summer of 1974. Subsequently, Vorwärts Löbau rose from the GDR league and Großmann had to play in the district league again for one season. In 1975/76, Großmann played for the GDR league club Chemie Böhlen . Coach Wolfgang Müller converted Großmann into a striker and used him mainly on the right wing. From the 22nd league games Großmann played 17 games and was successful with six goals.

For the 1976/77 season Großmann joined the league club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. He was initially included in the youth team, where he usually played most games as a striker until 1978. But he was also used in the Oberliga in his first season in Leipzig. He was substituted on three times and scored his first goal for Lok Leipzig in the match between 1. FC Lok and Sachsenring Zwickau (2-0) on matchday 21 . From the second half of the 1978/79 season, when two regular players, Wolfgang Altmann and Lutz Moldt, were out for a long time, Großmann was able to play his way into the first team of 1. FC Lok. In the 78 league games from the 2nd half series 1978/79 to the end of the Hinserie of the 1981/82 season, Großmann played 70 games in which he scored 14 goals. He was mainly used as a winger. In 1982 he completed only 13 games out of 26 league games, in which he was often only a substitute at the end.

The highlights of his time in Leipzig were the GDR Cup final in 1981 and participation in the games in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981/82 . In the cup final, which 1. FC Lok won 4: 1 over FC Vorwärts Frankfurt / O. won, Grossmann stormed on the right. Großmann played five of the eight European Cup games in Leipzig, in which he was only twice in the starting line-up. In the last game of 1. FC Lok, the quarter-final second leg against FC Barcelona (2: 1 after 0: 3), Großmann was only used in the 84th minute.

At the end of the 1982/83 season, 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig announced that Volker Großmann had ended his active career.

Eighteen months later, BSG Chemie Böhlen managed to bring their former striker back into their own ranks. The league relegated from 1983 and runner-up in the GDR league in 1984 still tried to return to the league, but suffered in the current season with just 21 goals out of 17 goals in the GDR league from goal poverty and hoped for more power from Großmann . The now 32-year-old was used as a right winger from the first league game of the second half of the season, but could not fulfill the hopes placed in him. Although he was initially in the starting line-up in eight league games, he only played three games over the full time and didn't score a goal. Coach Hans Welwarski used Großmann twice as a substitute at the end of the season, and only in his penultimate game did Großmann score another goal. For the 1985/86 season, Chemie Böhlen continued to hold on to Volker Großmann. In the first half of the season, however, he was almost only a substitute with two goals, while in the second half of the season he was in the starting eleven and scored two more goals. Even with Großmann, Chemie Böhlen did not return to the top division.

Finally, as a recreational footballer, Großmann then joined the GDR league relegated from 1986 Stahl Hettstedt .

After the reunification he moved to Bavaria , where he died in Pleinfeld in 2015 at the age of 62 .
