Gunter Sekora (born October 3, 1950 in Leipzig ) was a soccer player in the GDR upper league for 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and played once in the GDR national soccer team .

Athletic career

National leagues and cup

After his early years with the small company sports association (BSG) activist Nord Leipzig, Sekora was delegated to the Leipzig soccer performance center, the 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, in 1968. There he played in the 1968/69 season as a defender in the junior league . Out of the junior age, 1. FC Lok Sekora took over for the 1969/70 season in the first men's team, which played as a relegated league in the second-rate GDR league . With 14 out of 30 league games played and one goal, he ensured the immediate resurgence. As a 20-year-old newcomer, he was also in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which the second division had surprisingly reached, but lost 4-2 to FC Vorwärts Frankfurt . In the following eleven league seasons, Sekora was a defender at 1. FC Lok and was called up 251 times in the 286 league games played. During Sekora's active time at 1. FC Lok, the people of Leipzig made it to the final of the GDR soccer cup five times . Sekora was used in all finals and was thus also involved in cup victories in 1976 (3-0 over FC Vorwärts Frankfurt and 1981 (4-1) also via FC Vorwärts).

After 282 competitive games for 1. FC Lokomotive, Gunter Sekora left the Leipzig club after the 1980/81 season. He joined TSG Chemie Markkleeberg , located south of Leipzig , with whom he rose to the GDR league in 1982. After Sekora had only been used in eight games in the GDR league season 1982/83, he played all 56 league games in the seasons 1983/84 and 1984/85 and scored one goal in each season. As in his entire career, he was also used in Markkleeberg as a defender.

International

In the summer of 1968, Gunter Sekora was appointed to the squad of the GDR junior national team. He was used only in August 1968 in three of five international matches at a junior tournament in Hungary. Between 1972 and 1974 he was a member of the GDR youth national team . With her he played 19 international matches, including all ten games at the U-23 European Football Championship in 1974 . After a 3: 2 and a 0: 4 defeat in the final against Hungary, the GDR selection was runner-up in the European Championship.

At the age of 29, Sekora played his only senior international match. In the friendly game GDR - Greece (2-0) on April 16, 1980, he came on in 46th minute for midfielder Jürgen Pommerenke .

Of the 18 European Cup games played by 1. FC Lok Leipzig while Sekora was a member of the club, it was called up 17 times. The most successful EC season had in the competition for the UEFA Cup 1973/74 , when he, used in all ten games, advanced with his team to the semi-finals and only then lost both games against Tottenham Hotspur .
