Soccer career

Sachsenring Zwickau

Hans Schykowski grew up in Zwickau, West Saxony, where he went to school and completed an apprenticeship as an electrician. As a schoolboy he started playing soccer at BSG Motor Zwickau-Süd. In 1967 he joined the BSG Sachsenring Zwickau together with his one year older brother Joachim Schykowski , where he played first for the juniors and then for the second team in the second-class GDR league . On April 23, 1974 he had his first eight-minute assignment in the Zwickau league team, substituting for left winger Andreas Reichelt . He then had to wait over a year before he was used again in the league on the 21st match day of the 1974/75 season. He came into the game for the injured libero Heinz Krieger for 24 minutes and then took over his position until the end of the season.

After his first six league games, the 1.76 m tall Schykowski experienced his career high point on June 14, 1975. The Sachsenring team had reached the final of the GDR soccer cup for the fourth time, and Schykowski was again called up as a libero, as in the previous league games. After a dramatic development, the Zwickau team won the FDGB Cup for the third time with a 4-3 victory on penalties over the favorite Dynamo Dresden. Schykowski, who made it 3-2, was among the successful penalty takers.

Since Krieger did not get back on his feet after his injury, Schykowski remained Libero in the 1975/76 season and became a regular in the Zwickau league team with his 25 league appearances. He kept his position as a Libero and the status of a regular player until his departure from Zwickau at the end of the 1978/79 season. In the past five league years he had completed 79 point games in which he scored six goals from the libero position. He was also used in all eight games of the Zwickau for the European Cup Winners' Cup 1975/76 , in which the Sachsenring team surprisingly advanced to the semi-finals.

Bismuth floodplain

In the summer of 1979 Schykowski moved without his brother Joachim to the district and league rivals Wismut Aue. There he had a regular place in his standard position as Libero right from the start. From August 1979 to May 1981 he was used in 45 of 52 league point games. In the spring of 1981 he was injured so badly that he could only play eight league games over the next two years. It was only fully operational again at the beginning of the 1983/84 season. As a now 32-year-old, he was used again in 18 league point games, which he played through the full distance with two exceptions. Schykowski's last first division game took place on April 14, 1984. It ended in front of their own audience with a 1: 2 defeat against Dynamo Dresden.

Working life

Schykowski had already completed an engineering degree during his football career. After he had finished competitive sport, he returned to Zwickau and started working as an engineer in the electronics department at the Sachsenring Zwickau car factory.
