The EWG Eberswalder Wurst GmbH and the EFG Eberswalder Fleisch GmbH are producers of meat and sausage products in Britz (near Eberswalde) . The company was founded in 1977 as the "Eberswalde Slaughter and Processing Combine (SVKE)" and in the 1980s it developed into the largest meat processing company in Europe. Since November 1st, 2002 the company has been trading as EWG Eberswalder Wurst GmbH and EWG Eberswalder Fleisch GmbH.
history
3,000 people were employed on the 65 hectare site. The employees were recruited from all over the GDR, and two new building areas were created in Eberswalde to accommodate them . The company had its own polyclinic , hairdresser, restaurant, nursery, library and savings bank. The working conditions in the then modern plant were comparatively good. To supply the company with fresh meat, the Lichterfelde pig fattening and breeding facility was built near Eberswalde, where up to 200,000 pigs were raised.
From 1991, some areas were closed, and the number of employees fell significantly. In 2000 the plant had to file for bankruptcy. On November 1, 2002, the insolvency administrator transferred the business operations to the two companies "EFG Eberswalder Fleisch GmbH" and "EWG Eberswalder Wurst GmbH" by means of a company lease and transfer agreement. The partner of both companies is the "MBU Märkische Beteiligungs- und Unternehmensverwaltungs GmbH", whose owner and managing director is Dr. Eckhard Krone is.
Current activity
Today the company is the largest manufacturer of meat and sausage products in the state of Brandenburg . The company currently employs almost 250 permanent employees, plus up to 250 seasonal workers.
In 2016, almost 300 million sausages were sold across Germany. As in 2015, sales were around 115 million euros.
The original Eberswalder sausages are known nationwide. The specialties include sausages without casing and the original Schorfheider stick salami. The Eberswalder brand is particularly well known in Berlin and the new federal states. The company sells its goods primarily in eastern Germany at all trading houses with a focus on Berlin-Brandenburg, is the supplier of stadium sausages to 1. FC Union Berlin and the official sausage supplier to O2 World Berlin .
