Dirk Schnell

Dirk Schnell (born December 19, 1959 in Erfurt ) is a former German handball player . He was used in the position of left winger .

Schnell first came into contact with handball at TSV Motor Gispersleben before the family moved to Eisenach in 1970. There he started playing handball at the age of eleven at BSG Motor Eisenach and in 1979 went to the children's and youth sports school in Frankfurt (Oder) ; here he played at ASK forward Frankfurt / Oder . With the Frankfurt team, he was FDGB-Pokal-Winner and Vice-GDR-Champion in 1983 and again Vice-GDR-Champion in 1987. He moved to SC Magdeburg , with whom he won the GDR championship in 1987/1988. From Magdeburg he moved back to Motor Eisenach, where he was active for two seasons. From 1990 to 1995 he was active as a player-coach at VfB Kassel , then from 1996 to 2000 also as a player-coach at ThSV Eisenach II.

Dirk Schnell was active in the youth national teams of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1976 to 1979 and in 1979 took part in the junior world championship. Between 1982 and 1990 he played 82 international matches for the GDR national handball team . In 1984 he won the friendship competitions with this team, which were held because of the boycott of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . In 1986 he won third place at the 1986 World Cup with the GDR national team .

After graduating from high school, he began studying sports, which he successfully completed as a certified sports teacher at the German University of Physical Culture and Sports (DHfK) in Leipzig . He is currently (2009) working as a financial advisor.
