Werner Assmann (born March 17, 1924 in Calbe ; † August 11, 1993 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German handball player .

Life

Werner Aßmann attended school in his hometown of Calbe from 1930 to 1940 and then completed an apprenticeship as a surveying technician . As a soldier in World War II , he was taken prisoner by the Americans in 1943 and returned to Germany in 1947. From 1947 to 1951 he trained as a certified sports teacher in Blankenburg / Harz . From 1954 to 1974 he was a teacher in Eisenach , then until 1985 in Wutha-Farnroda . Then he moved to Frankfurt (Oder), where he worked as a teacher until his retirement. Assmann was married and had one child.

Sporting successes

Werner Assmann had been an active handball player since 1947. In 1952 and 1953 he was with his club progress Calbe DDR - field handball champion , 1958 Motor Eisenach . In the 1950s he had around 100 missions as a national handball player in the GDR and was temporarily captain of the national team. In 1949, 1951, 1953, 1955 and 1957 he and his team were student world champions in indoor handball . An injury ended his active career in 1963 and he became the coach of the handball team at BSG Motor Eisenach . In 1974 he was dismissed as a coach “for political reasons”, and was succeeded by Hans-Joachim Ursinus .

Werner Assmann was the holder of the badge of honor of the German Handball Federation in gold. In his honor, the ThSV Eisenach venue bears the name Werner-Assmann-Halle .
