The Weferlingen castle ruins , also known as Weferlingen Castle for short , are the ruins of a castle in Weferlingen in the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt . The keep of the castle is called Grauer Harm or Grauer Hermann .

history

The castle was probably built as a moated castle in the 13th century by the Lords of Hohenlage . After the castle was conquered by Duke Albrecht von Braunschweig in 1316 , it is later proven again as a fiefdom of those von Honlage. It arrived in the 16th century in the self-administration of Halberstadt bishop was appointed and castle rebuilt. In the 17th century, the castle was temporarily owned by Prince Friedrich II of Hesse-Homburg , the Prussian equestrian general known as the Prince of Homburg , who once again had it extensively expanded. The early Gothic moated castle, a three-sided complex with a square courtyard and outer bailey that completely enclosed the core castle , was previously protected from the water of the Aller and had a ten-meter-wide moat that is now used as a road. The outer walls of the castle, the windows of which show the Renaissance style , are still three storeys high.

The still well-preserved, originally 30-meter-high keep in the outer bailey has a height of 28 meters on a base area of 12 meters by 12 meters and a wall thickness of 2.5 meters. Events are taking place on the castle grounds today. The ruins were renovated in nine construction phases to protect them from further deterioration.

On the day of the open monument in September 2012, the refurbished keep, which was converted into a lookout tower , could be climbed for the first time. On October 21, 2012, the viewing platform installed on the tower was officially released.
