He quickly played his way into the field of vision of foreign clubs, so that he was tested together with Cuban Julio Fis in October 2001 by the German club THW Kiel and the Swiss Pfadi Winterthur . Eventually Fis went to Kiel and Špoljarić joined Winterthur, where he was scheduled to replace the Hungarian Gábor Vass. After winning the Swiss championship, he returned to Croatia in the summer of 2002. There he won the championship and cup again in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, until he finally moved to the top Slovenian club RK Celje in 2006 . There he was planned as a replacement for Uroš Zorman and also won the championship in 2007, but returned after only one year to his financially rehabilitated Croatian parent club. In the summer of 2010, Špoljarić joined the German association Füchse Berlin. With the Foxes he reached the semifinals of the EHF Champions League 2011/12 , where they lost to the eventual winner THW Kiel with 24:25. In 2014 he won the DHB Cup with the Foxes . Špoljarić ended his career in 2016 with an expiring contract due to injury.

Denis Špoljarić made 131 international appearances for the Croatian national team , but only made a few appearances in the playmaker position behind Ivano Balić . In the 2003 World Cup in Portugal , he was world champion and the 2005 World Championship in Tunisia Vice World Champion. He also won gold at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .

At the 2007 World Cup in Germany , however, he finished only a disappointing 5th place with the Croatians who came as the favorite for the title; at the 2008 European Championships in Norway, however, he was runner-up with his country. At the 2009 World Cup in his own country, he was runner-up.
