Roland Schlinger (born September 17, 1982 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian handball player . His height is 1.92 m.
Schlinger, who last played for the Austrian club Alpla HC Hard and played for the Austrian men's national handball team (shirt number 21) until the beginning of 2015 , was mostly used in the left backcourt .
Career
Handball was initially just a compensation for Schlinger, actually the right-handed player wanted to become a tennis player . Only in 1998, at the age of 16, was the Viennese discovered by Harald Grünanger and directed to the SG Handball West Vienna . In 2000 Schlinger made his debut in the first team before moving to A1 Bregenz in 2002/03 . With the Mannen vom Bodensee he won the Austrian championship in 2003/04 , 2004/05 and 2005/06 and the Austrian Cup in 2002/03 and 2005/06 . In the 2005/06 season he was also named "Handball Player of the Year" by the Handball League Austria . In 2006 he moved to the Spanish top club Ademar León for a year , where he reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 2007 , but could not prevail and in 2007 returned to Bregenz. In 2007/08 , 2008/09 and 2009/10 he won the Austrian championship with Bregenz, and in 2009/10 he was again voted "Handball Player of the Year". In the summer of 2010 he joined the German Bundesliga club HBW Balingen-Weilstetten . For the 2014/15 season he returned to his home country to Alpla HC Hard, where Schlinger signed a three-year contract with an option for another. With the Harders , the right-hander was able to secure the Austrian championship in 2014/15 and 2016/17 before ending his career.
Roland Schlinger has played 168 international matches for the Austrian men's national handball team . He took part in the 2014 European Handball Championship . Schlinger ended his team career in March 2015.
