Ten teams are represented in the top division, the HLA. The championship was divided into several phases. In the main round, all teams played a simple round trip against each opponent. After that, the league was divided into two groups.
The first six teams played in the further rounds of the round to make it into the HLA semifinals, while the last four teams had to fight against the top four teams in the second division to stay in the league.
In a thrilling home game, Bregenz defeated the Viennese in the third and decisive game of the final series. After 60 minutes of the finest handball, the defending champion, from whom the guests demanded everything, won the fourth HLA championship title in a row.
