The 53rd season of the Austrian handball championship began in August 2013. The reigning champions of the 2012/13 season Alpla HC Hard was able to defend the title. The SC Ferlach was relegated to the Handball Bundesliga Austria .

Handball League Austria
Ten teams are represented in the top division, the HLA. The championship is divided into several phases. First a main round is played, then the teams are divided into two groups and play in playoffs for a place in the HLA final.
Basic pass HLA
In the basic round, all teams played a simple round-trip round against every opponent. The first five teams qualify for the upper playoff while the remaining teams have to go to the lower playoff.

Playoffs
The first five teams of the regular season play in a further round-trip for the placement in the HLA quarter-finals, with each team having to play a home game against the youth national team from the 1994 year. The last five teams play for the first three places which also qualify for the quarterfinals. The qualification will also be played out in a round trip plus a home game against Team 94. The two worst-placed teams play a best of three series against relegation.

HLA quarter finals
For the quarter-finals, all participants of the top and the top three of the bottom playoff are qualified. The first against the eighth, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth placed from a table of upper and lower playoffs. Everything is played in best of three series, the winners of the quarter-finals advance to the semi-finals.

HLA semifinals
In the semi-finals, the winners of the quarter-finals play for a place in the HLA finals, whereby the matches are arranged according to the same scheme as in the quarter-finals. The semi-finals will also be played in best-of-three mode.
