Union Leoben is an Austrian handball club from Leoben . After its major sponsor , the association takes on the role of Union JURI Leoben .

The association was founded by Franz Rietner in 1947. The also local club SV Leoben, which operated large field handball , was dissolved in 1967. In 1981 Union Leoben became Styrian champions for the first time. In the 1995/1996 season, under coach Hermann Hollerer, he was promoted to what was then the East League. In the same year there was also a female youth team for the first time; In 1996/1997 five teams were already registered for the championship.

The year 1998 brought relegation to the Styrian regional league. In 2000 the club became national league champions and rose to the Bundesliga East. There the team became Austrian Bundesliga champions in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In 2008 the club rose to Austria's top division, the Handball League Austria . In 2009, 2010 and 2011 the club stayed in the 1st Austrian League (HLA). In 2012 the HLA reached the “Upper Playoff” for the first time

In 2013 and 2014 they stayed in the 1st Austrian League (HLA). In the 2013/14 season Leoben brought the first French player to the handball league Austria. Pierre-Yves Ragot played against West Vienna for the first time in the Leoben dress. He was previously in conversation with the German first division club HSG Wetzlar .

In the 2015/16 season, the best placement in the club's history was achieved with 5th place. In 2016/17 the club was relegated to the 2nd Austrian League (HLA) and played in the Handball Bundesliga Austria in the 2017/18 season .

In 2018 he was immediately promoted back to the 1st league, before relegating to the spusu Challenge (2nd league) again in 2019 . In 2020 Union Leoben was under coach Dino Pojo after the basic season on a promotion place in the spusu league (1st league). Due to the corona pandemic in Austria , the season was canceled, which means that the club will have to compete in the 2nd division again for the 2020/21 season.

Home venue is the Leoben-Donawitz sports hall. Union Leoben has been supported by the Vikings fan club for both home and away games since 2002.
