The highest handball league in Austria has been called spusu LIGA after its main sponsor since 2017 . For women it is called Women Handball Austria . It is organized by the Austrian Handball Federation.
Ten teams are represented in the spusu LIGA. The championship is divided into several phases. In the main round, all teams play a simple round trip against each opponent. After that, the league is divided into two groups.
The first five teams play in a further round-trip for placement in the HLA semi-finals, while the last five teams play for the remaining three places. Last and penultimate of the "lower play-offs" play a best-of-three series against relegation to the spusu Challenge .
history
The early years
Austrian indoor handball championships were held for the first time in 1961, initially only for men. Field handball championships have existed since 1923. From 1961 to 1969 the Austrian champions were determined in a tournament form. The toughest competitors of the Viennese teams, from where handball spread in Austria, were the ATSV Linz, UHC Salzburg, Union Edelweiss Linz and the Salzburg AK.
70s, 80s and 90s
Union Edelweiß Linz was the first handball league champion in Austria. Until the 1976/77 season, Bärnbach and Krems, with two and three titles, were the most common. This was followed by an uninterrupted run from Linz for four years. From then on, ATSE Waagner Biro Graz dominated the league until the 1990s, the Styrians were able to secure the title six times in nine years. As early as the 1988/89 season, however, UHK Volksbank Wien announced the new leader, and the Viennese were able to secure every championship until 1992/93 with one interruption. By the year 2000, the title could then be brought three times to Linz and twice each to Bruck and Bärnbach .
2000 to 2010
From this point on, Vorarlberg began to dominate, and for the next ten years a team from the Ländle won the championship cup every time. With nine stars, Bregenz is also the record champion, HC Hard was only able to interrupt the Bregenz series in the 2002/03 season .
2010 until today
In 2010/11 , the Fivers Margareten handball club was able to bring its first championship title to another state in a decade. In the very next year, however, the Alpla HC Hard started a four-year series under head coach Markus Burger . This was ended again in 2015/16 by the Fivers from Vienna. In 2016/17 the Harders again secured the title. Since the 2017/18 season , the league has again had a main sponsor in the form of the mobile operator spusu . This season the Fivers from Vienna secured the title again. After the partnership was expanded, the name of the league was changed to "spusu LIGA" from the 2018/19 season . During this season the UHK Krems became champions and ended an eight-year run in which the Alpla HC Hard (5 titles) and the handball club Fivers Margareten (3 titles) shared the titles.
