The spusu Challenge (until 2018 Handball Bundesliga Austria ) is the second highest league of men in Austrian handball . Like the top division, the spusu league , it is played by the Austrian Handball Federation .
Game mode
The league is played in a basic round and in subsequent play-off rounds for promotion and relegation, with the best five in the promotion play-off for promotion to the HLA and the last five in the lower play-off (UPO) play against relegation to the regional league.
The first of the promotion play-offs plays against the fourth and the second against the third in a series in the best-of-3 mode (Bo3) for a place in the final, which in turn is played as a Bo3 series. The final winner is determined as a fixed climber.
The bottom two of the UPO's standings have to fight relegation from the Bundesliga in a Bo3 series.
