Bregenz Handball was founded in 1946 as a section of SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz (other sections football and table tennis). At that time handball was still played on the large field , it was not until the end of the 1950s that the game appeared on the small field in the hall. Bregenz Handball was also one of the pioneers in the Lake Constance area with this changeover. In 1968, the first gymnasium with international dimensions was built in Bregenz-Schendlingen. The Schendlingerhalle is a milestone in the history of the Bregenz Handball club. This was to serve as the home ground for all Bregenz teams for no less than 36 years.

In the 1972/1973 season, a joint indoor handball competition was held with Oberschwaben for the first time, and many successful years in the German leagues followed. In 1989 Bregenz was the first Vorarlberg handball club to be promoted to the league of the Baden-Württemberg handball association. The squad of the championship team from back then consisted of people who for a long time, and in some cases to this day, influenced and governed club activities at Bregenz Handball: Markus Burger, Alexander Delladio, Roland Breakfast, Wolfgang Breakfast, Ivo Ganner, Michael Gaudl, Peter Mössler, Heinz Schneider, Markus Stockinger, Stefan Zumtobel, Thomas Singler and Christian Schneider.

The Baden-Württemberg Association League prepared for the move to Austria for many years, starting with the 1988/1989 season with the first legionnaire: Thomas Singler. With the introduction of the two-part 2. Bundesliga in Austria, the planned change from the German to the Austrian league came in the 1995/1996 season. After only two years in the 2nd league, the Bregenz team, again as the first Vorarlberg team, made it to the state league A (today spusu league ) with the championship title in the 1996/1997 game year .

After the handball section at SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz had been run like an independent club for many years, the parent club actually split up in 1996. The increasing importance of the association made it possible for various companies to be involved as main and name sponsors , so that the association name was changed several times ( Casino Zima Alno Bregenz , PTA Bregenz , Post Bregenz , jet2web Bregenz , A1 Bregenz ). It was not until the 2012/2013 season that the club's management decided that the main sponsor would no longer have any influence on the name of the club.

The first two seasons in the state league were marked by the struggle for relegation, although in the 1998/1999 season Holger Schneider, a 99-time German national player, acted as player- coach . With the commitment of the Croatian Olympic champion Bruno Gudelj as player-coach in the 1999/2000 season, Bregenz Handball developed into the top Austrian team. In its first season, Bregenz Handball won the ÖHB Cup, the first title of a Vorarlberg team in men's handball. The first championship title in the club's history followed a year later. Under the reigning player- coach Dagur Sigurðsson from the beginning of the 2003/2004 season , the run of success was continued. When the Icelander left the club after the 2006/07 season , four cup and six championship titles had already been recorded. After Sigurðsson, Zdravko Medic took over as player- coach for one season. He was able to defend the title with the team. Martin Liptak took over the coaching position from him in the first two years of his activity with the Vorarlberg team, the Slovak was able to secure the championship title every year; Bregenz handball had secured the championship title for seven years in a row. Until the 2011/12 season , Liptak was in charge of Bregenz, but could no longer celebrate any titles with the team.

After Liptak, Geir Sveinsson was responsible for the team, while the team made it to the semi-finals of the league in 2012/13 but failed in the newly introduced quarter-finals in 2013/14 . After this season, the Icelander moved to SC Magdeburg , for him Robert Hedin took the place on the coaching bench. Hedin led Bregenz handball back into the league final for the first time in four years, which was lost in two games against local rivals from Hard . Furthermore, the team reached the Final Four of the cup competition in the same year , while the SG Handball West Wien was defeated in the semifinals , the team failed in the final at the Fivers Margareten handball club . In 2015/16 they lost to the Fivers from Vienna in the league finals. After the 2016/17 season, Jörg Lützelberger took over as coach. After a mixed 2018/19 season, Markus Burger took over as head coach in March 2019 . In 2018/19 , Bregenz Handball reached the final tournament of the Cup, which was held in the Dornbirn Messestadion . In the semifinals, Handball Tirol could be relegated to the barrier, but in the final the men from Lake Constance failed at UHK Krems .

International

In the European Cup, Bregenz Handball reached the round of 16 in the Cup Winners' Cup and in the EHF Cup for four years in a row before the next big step was achieved in the 2004/2005 season: For the first time, the Bregenz team wintered thanks to their entry into the EHF Cup quarter-finals in the European Cup. In autumn 2005, the team managed to defeat Serbian champions Vojvodina Novi Sad in the EHF Champions League qualification and move into the group stage. There they had no chance, but were able to say goodbye with a 32:31 win over SC Magdeburg . It was also the first victory in the European premier class of an Austrian men's team since the great times of West Vienna (in 1994 it just failed to reach the semi-finals). In the following seasons, Bregenz Handball was able to advance to the group stage of the EHF Champions League every year . They were eliminated from the competition in 2006/07 , 2007/08 and 2008/09 as the bottom of the group, but were able to celebrate another victory in the premier class against GOG Svendborg TGI from Denmark in 2007/08 .

In 2009/10 the Vorarlberg team failed to qualify against Fyllingen Handball and thus entered the second round of the EHF Cup . A win over AH Italgest Casarano was followed by a loss to BM Aragón in the third round. In 2010/11 the team failed again in the Champions League qualification, in the EHF Cup the team Metaloplastika Šabac and Madeira Andebol SAD defeated and only failed in the round of the last 16 teams, with a total score of 41:61, to RK Velenje . In 2011/12 , the Bregenz team, as runner-up in the previous season, took part directly in the EHF Cup. The team failed in round three to BM Granollers . In 2013/14 , 2014/15 , 2015/16 and 2017/18 the team took part in the EHF Cup again, but they could never overcome the second round of the competition. The last international appearance took place in the 2018/19 season in the EHF Challenge Cup , Bregenz Handball made it to the third round but failed there due to AEK Athens .
