history

The 1980s

In 1981 and 1982 the club, which at that time was still under the name ATSV Innsbruck , fought for promotion to the State League B, but failed both times. With targeted training and increased youth work, but also with the help of the Polish player Jan Piotrowicz, coach Werner Jenewein led the ATSVI-Sparkasse back to the State League B in 1983. In 1984 and 1985 they were both runner-up. In the final table of the 1985/86 season, the team was only seventh. For the handball department headed by Hans-Peter Ullmann, this was the reason to go a completely new way. Mariusz Czock was hired as a full-time trainer with the task of leading the ATSVI-Sparkasse back into the A-League in two years. He brought Janos Czismadia and reached his goal as planned in April 1988. The ATSVI made Tyrolean handball first class again. As a newcomer to the upper house, the ATSV Innsbruck was able to surprise in its first year (1988/89) in the national handball league A with a fourth place.

In the championship season 1989/1990 coach Czok hoped to be able to realize his European Cup goals. Despite the fourth place in the championship and a narrow defeat in the ÖHB Cup final (failed in two final games with only one goal difference), the disappointment was great. There was more good news for the club this season. Ewald Humenberger, Michael Maurer, Markus Gottwald, Robert Mühlthaler and Marius Caras became part of the World Cup team in 1992. The handball performance center was founded and a new, future-oriented path was taken in youth work.

The 1990s

In the following two game seasons 1990/1991 and 1991/1992, the team first fell back to the middle play-off and finally to ninth place. In the absence of budgetary coverage of the state league operations, the ATSVI Innsbruck decided in 1992 to withdraw the team from the state league and thus had to take note of the forced relegation to the state league. The "Project 2000" was started with two men's and six junior teams. In 1993 the ATSVI was the Tyrolean national champion. In order to be able to offer the youth a better opportunity for further sporting development, a syndicate was established with HC Wörgl in such a way that the ATSVI youth in particular provided the U21 team for the B-League competition. The cooperation was ended after one year with regard to the popular division of the B-League in order to give the ATSVI the chance to qualify for the group West of the B-League via the national championship title.

In fact, the young team became Tyrolean champions in April 1995 under coach Klaus Hagleitner and then made it to the new Bundesliga West. Was the 1995/1996 season still under the pressure of relegation, the team wanted to achieve a place in the midfield again in the following championship. This was followed by a cooperation with the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo with the “Wolfs Logo” created by Hubert Weidinger. The goal chase of the "ATSVI-Wolves" led the men's team to second place at the end of the Bundesliga championship 1996/1997 - the ATSVI was again number one in Tyrolean handball. The targeted youth work by Klaus Hagleitner, Manfred Reinalter and Peter Patterer brought Roland Pichler, Markus Burger, Wolfgang Reinalter, Markus Ribis and Markus Lebitsch into the squad of the Austrian junior team. In 1997 there was one bang after the other. First, in February, a new structure was created for the “ATSVI handball performance model Innsbruck” and this young talent initiative was later transferred to the “handball performance center Innsbruck / Tyrol”.

It was thanks to the efforts of Tyrol's association president Thomas Czermin that the national team coach Nico Markovic accepted the challenge of taking over the sporting management of the HLZ and also coaching the young ATSVI Bundesliga team in addition to his job as team coach. A two-year plan for promotion to the A-League was drawn up. The third and defining bang for the next club years was the conclusion of the multi-year sponsorship contract with the company abc-Fliesen. The youngest Bundesliga team, with an average age of 22 years, finally managed to get promoted back to the State League A or the newly created Handball League Austria in 1999 . The "performance" of the ATSVI in the first HLA year was remarkable: third place in the 2000 final ranking and also the promotion to the final four of the ÖHB Cup. That meant the first qualification of a Tyrolean handball team for a European Cup competition. Wolfgang Reinalter, Ugis Vikstrems, Viktor Szilágyi and Roland Pichler started to get involved in the national team.

The 2000s

Before the start of the second season of the upper house, the club's management took a well-considered but daring step. In future, the HLA team of the ATSVI handball branch should appear under the abbreviation "HIT" (Handball Innsbruck Tirol). The HIT team played the most successful season in the history of ATSVI handball to date. The Slovak runner-up MHK Kosice was kicked out of the competition in the first round of the EHF Cup. In the second round, HIT met the German world-class team TBV Lemgo . This hurdle could not be overcome. A high defeat in the home game due to bad luck with injuries was followed by a narrow defeat in the second leg with 29:32. Because of his outstanding achievements, the young star Viktor Szilágyi could no longer be held, he moved to Germany to Dormagen. With his departure, sand got into the HIT gearbox. The master playoff was not reached, with the crash in the promotion playoff, coach Markovic also resigned from his position. His successor Klaus Hagleitner then managed to fix the league. The next HLA year began and ended irregularly. After many draws in the regular season, the HLA-seven had to go back to the promotion playoff. There all encounters were clearly won and thus the club secured participation in the HLA championship 2002/2003. That the team had the playing potential for the championship playoff became apparent in spring when HIT qualified for the Cup Final Four in Innsbruck. On May 17, 2002, the team reached the cup final for the second time. Seconds before the end of the game against the old and new champions from Bregenz, the dream of the first cup victory was over. It was the second time that the team had competed in a European Cup, this time in the Cup winners' Cup .

The 2002/2003 season got off to an outstanding start, at the end of 2002 HIT was in second place in the basic round. HIT drew a dream ticket in the European Cup. Opponent was none other than the defending champion from Spain, the team of BM Ciudad Real with the world handball player Talant Dujshebaev . On November 9, 2002, “the handball game of the decade” took place for HIT. The European Cup winner from Spain demonstrated 60 minutes of world class handball. A difference that was appreciated by over 1000 handball fans in the Hötting West sports hall - Innsbruck was welcomed into the dressing room with standing ovations. The second leg in Spain took place in a different world for HIT. After Kosice and Lemgo, HIT also played a good game in front of 2500 enthusiastic Spanish fans. In spring 2003, HIT was awarded third place for a long time. At the end of the championship playoff, the fifth place was, but still the third qualification for a European Cup competition. To the great disappointment of the team, the club management saw no chance this time to raise the necessary financial resources to participate again.

After a good preparation and a furious start to the 2003/2004 season against Wien-Margareten, the results were no longer great. Not least because of the serious injuries to Andi Stachelberger and Ugis Vikstrems, the team only finished seventh in the regular season and then in the championship playoff. in the ÖHB-Cup, HIT had to give up in the quarter-finals. At the urging of trainer Klaus Hagleitner, Mindaugas Andriuskas was signed as a new left-hander for the 2004/2005 season. On September 18, 2004, the first derby took place in the sold out home hall against the ascended Tyrolean local rivals ULZ Sparkasse Schwaz. After an eight-goal deficit, the HIT handball players scored 31:31 in a furious finish. In October, after a serious injury to captain Markus Burger, the first concerns about relegation appeared. The ninth place in the regular season was synonymous with the promotion playoff. However, all games were won there and thus participation in the HLA was secured again. With the engagement of coach Bruno Gudelj for the 2005/2006 season new momentum should be brought to the team. The season started promisingly with four points from two games. In the derby against Schwaz, the team not only lost the game, but also their self-confidence. In addition, there was a never-ending series of serious injuries. After the basic round, HIT was only in eighth place and therefore had to go back to the promotion playoff.

After the ATSVI handball honorary captain Manfred Reinalter ended his career, the youth leader at the time, Peter Patterer, was able to convince the young Stefan Öhler of the appeal of a young talent. After two serious injuries, Stefan Öhler decided at the age of 21 to retire from top handball. Stefan Öhler threw himself into youth work with consistency, enthusiasm and great ambition. As a result, the club's youth teams were able to achieve numerous successes. They were often Tyrolean champions in the various age groups, runner-up in the national championship, and the teams made it to the finals in numerous international tournaments. From this success story, the vice-state championship of the U17s in 2004 and 2005 should be highlighted. In the 2006/2007 season, Stefan Öhler finally took over as the youngest HLA coach at HIT. After an extremely mixed round, a transfer coup succeeded in January 2007 with the commitment of the former vice world handball player Nedeljko Jovanović . This ensured that he would remain in the HLA again, but now the time was ripe to strive for higher goals.

The newcomers for the 2007/2008 season, Richard Wöss , Andrius Rackauskas, Luka Marinovic and Thomas Schinagl, turned out to be the gold handle that brought HIT back into the championship playoff after four years. The final fifth place meant not only the best result in a long time, but also the qualification for the EHF Challenge Cup . The team made the following season even better. Both in the regular season and in the master's playoff, the HIT ensemble showed strong performances, which ultimately brought third place. Only in the league semi-finals was the end of the line against the eventual runner-up from Hard. In addition, the Innsbruckers made it into the final of the ÖHB Cup for the third time in the club's history: There they had to admit defeat to the host aon Fivers by just 25:26 and thus again missed the first title in the club's history. In the EHF Challenge Cup, HIT failed after victories in the qualifying tournament and against RK Poreč from Croatia only in the round of 16 and only because of the away goals rule at Beşiktaş Istanbul .
