RK Poreč is a handball club from the Croatian city of Poreč . The first team plays in the first Croatian league.

history

Handball was played for the first time in Istria in 1949 , on a soccer field by the former silos, where students from Zagreb met a selection of soccer players from NK Jadran for a duel during the holidays. Even then, Lujo Györy stood in goal for the locals, who later became Yugoslavia's national goalkeeper.

From 1951/52 field handball was played on the football field. However, this disappeared quite quickly with the introduction of small-field handball, as it is known today.

In 1953 handball training began, and in 1954 the game was officially played for the first time; this year is therefore considered the year of foundation. As part of the "DTO" (an organization in the city that had all sports under itself, which also meant that you participated as a player in several sports), they took part in a joint Istrian league from 1955. In addition to handball, all other sports were represented in this league. So it came about that some players took part in several disciplines in the league.

In addition to men's handball, women's handball was also introduced at the same time; this was particularly successful between the 1970s and 1990s.

The men played in the Regional League of Istria and often fought for promotion. In 1963 the men's and women's teams left the DTO sports club and in 1968 founded the independent handball club RK Poreč.

After ups and downs, the club became champions in the Istrian league in 1987 and rose to the PIR league; however, at the end of the season the financial basis broke away. Therefore, the men's team withdrew completely from the competition. The same happened to the women three years later. Only the youth promotion remained until 1995.

After a continuous increase they made it into the second Croatian league for the first time in 2003/04. The team has been playing in the Croatian first division since the 2007/08 season.
