Elaine Leighton

Elaine Leighton (* 22. May 1926 in New York , NY ) is an American drummer of modern jazz .

She was in the same grade as Stan Getz and Shorty Rogers in high school .

At the beginning of her career, Leighton worked for Jackie Cain and Roy Kral in 1949/50 . She then worked with the follow-up band, the Sweethearts of Rhythm , led by Ann Mae Winburn . In 1953/54 she played in the trio of pianist Carl Drinkard and accompanied Billie Holiday with him . In addition, Leighton played since 1953 in the trio of pianist and singer Beryl Booker , including their European tour 1954. After Leighton worked as a freelance musician in New York, conducted 1957-1959 her own trio with which they in Page Three Club concerted and worked with Jimmy Raney , among others . She is married to bassist Kenny O'Brian .
