Rubén Garabaya Arenas (born September 15, 1978 in Avilés , Spain ) is a former Spanish handball player . He is 2.01 m tall and weighs 107 kg.
Garabaya, who last played for the Spanish club Naturhouse La Rioja and played for the Spanish national team, was usually used as a circle runner.
Rubén Garabaya started playing handball at BM Corvera. He played his first league games in the Spanish league ASOBAL in 1997 for Ademar León. Here he won the Copa ASOBAL and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1999 . From 1999 to 2001 he played for Frigorificos del Morrazo Cangas for two years before moving to BM Valladolid . With the local rival of his former club Ademar León, he won the Copa ASOBAL again in 2003 and the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 2005 and 2006 ; as a highlight he reached the semifinals of the EHF Champions League with Valladolid in 2007 , where they failed at SG Flensburg-Handewitt . In 2007, FC Barcelona signed Garabaya. There he won the Copa del Rey again in 2009 and 2010. With Barcelona he was also in the final of the Champions League in 2010, but failed there at THW Kiel . Garabaya then moved to Naturhouse La Rioja. He ended his career after the 2017/18 season. Since August he has been working as an assistant coach at CB Ciudad de Logroño.
Garabaya made 168 appearances for the Spanish national team , scoring 318 goals. He won gold at the 2005 World Cup and silver at the 2006 European Championship . At the 2007 World Cup in Germany, he and Spain were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Germany and ended up only in a disappointing 7th place. At the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2011 World Championships , he won bronze medals with the national team.
