Jesús "Chechu" Fernández Oceja (born February 25, 1974 in Santander , Spain ) is a former Spanish handball player . He played for TSV GWD Minden in the Bundesliga . With the Spanish national team he won the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games .

Career

Fernández Oceja began playing handball in 1984 in the youth teams of the Colegio Salesianos . At the age of 17 he joined the top club Teka Santander in 1991 (later also Caja Cantabria Santander and CB Cantabria ). With Santander he won numerous titles. He has been the Spanish champion twice, four cup wins and three European Cup titles. The highlight was winning the Champions League in 1994 , although the club was in a serious financial crisis. In 2002 Fernández Oceja moved to the second division club Balonmano Málaga . However, he left the club again in November. He accepted an offer from TSV GWD Minden , who were looking for a replacement for their long-term injured captain Frank von Behren . Despite a new contract offer, he decided in 2004 to end his career and return to Málaga to set up a hotel with his wife.

National teams

Jesús Fernández Oceja made six youth and 37 junior internationals (21 and 83 goals respectively) for Spain. With the U-18 selection, he was third at the U-18 European Championship in 1992 in Switzerland and vice-U-21 world champion in 1995 in Argentina .

Between 1995 and 2004 he played 54 international matches (54 goals) for the Spanish national team , with which he won the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and became vice European champion in his own country in the same year.

He also won the bronze medal at the 1997 Mediterranean Games in Bari .
