Oleg Gennadijewitsch Grebnew ( Russian Олег Геннадьевич Гребнев , born February 4, 1968 in Volgograd ) is a former Russian handball player and since 2012 president of the Russian handball club GK Kaustik Volgograd .

Athletic career

The 2.06 m tall and 110 kg heavy Grebnew began playing handball in his hometown of Volgograd. During his time in the army, the circle runner played for the club of the armed forces CSKA Moscow , with whom he was Soviet champion in 1987 and won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1986/87 and the European Cup of National Champions in 1987/88 . From 1988 he played for Kaustik Volgograd. In February 1996, the German Bundesliga club HSV Düsseldorf signed him for the relegation battle. In 1998 he moved to the Spanish league ASOBAL to BM Ciudad Real . With the Royal, he won the 2001/02 European Cup Winners' Cup. After four years he went to the Hungarian association Dunaferr SE . In March 2003 he returned to BM Gáldar in Spain for a few months.

Oleg Grebnew made his debut in the Soviet national team in 1988. With the junior selection, he was 1989 junior world champion. He also won the title at the 1991 Student World Cup. At the 1992 Olympic Games , he was Olympic champion with the United Team . With the Russian national team he was world champion at the world championships in 1993 and 1997 , and vice-world champion in 1999 . At the European Championships in 1996 he won gold, 1994 and 2000 silver.

Professional career

Grebnew went to school in Volgograd. In 1985 he enrolled at the State Institute for Physical Culture. From 1986 to 1988 he served in the Soviet Army. He then studied at the Polytechnic Institute in Volgograd, where he graduated with honors in 1993.

Awards

In 1993 he received the Order of Friendship of Peoples (Орден Дружбы народов). For the Olympic victory he received the award of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (Заслуженный мастер спорта СССР).
