Karl Wagenmann (Metallurgist)

Karl Wagenmann (born February 6, 1888 in Cologne , † September 23, 1953 ) was a German metallurgist .

Life

Wagenmann studied metallurgy at the Technical University of Aachen . In 1912 he obtained his diploma and in 1913 he was promoted to Dr.-Ing. PhD . He then worked for a few years as an assistant at the Institute for Metallurgy and Metallurgy and completed his habilitation in Aachen as a private lecturer . In 1918 he took over the position of head of the central laboratory of the union for copper slate mining in Mansfeld , which he held until 1946, when he was appointed head of the research and development department in the Mansfeld combine "Wilhelm Pieck" . At the same time he became director of the smelting department of the combine and worked in this function on several specialist committees. This included not only the "Scientific Council of the Ministry of Metallurgy and Ore Mining", but also the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin , of which he had been a full member since February 1953.

In 1953 he died of a heart embolism .

Act

With his name numerous procedural and improving existing methods work are connected, the process for working up iron sows on molybdic acid and ferromolybdenum . The same applies to the extraction of pure selenium and sodium selenite from chamber sludge . An important field of work, derived from the conditions of the GDR at that time, was the extraction of precious metals from the Mansfeld raw gold . In collaboration with W. Feit and G. Lindemann, he succeeded in extracting rhenium from lead-containing fly ash . Further work concerned the development of a process for the production of hydraulic mortar using raw slag . He was also concerned with improving a process for making paving stones from the raw slag from Mansfeld.

Wagenmann came out with various publications. Of particular importance was the continuation of the three-volume textbook on Metallurgy , a standard work that he took over as editor , published by Victor Tafel until 1945 . Volumes 1 and 2 were able to be expanded and improved by Wagenmann before his death in 1953.
