Raúl González Gutiérrez (born January 8, 1970 in Valladolid ) is a Spanish handball coach and former handball player .

Career as a player

society

The 1.85 m tall right-handed man was mostly used on the middle back . He started in his hometown at ACD Michelin or its successor club BM Valladolid with handball. Since 1987 he was a member of the professional team in the ASOBAL league . With Valladolid he won the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 2005. Internationally, he reached the final in the EHF Cup 1998/1999, the Euro City Cup 2000 and the European Cup Winners' Cup 2003/04.

Due to his services to BM Valladolid , his shirt number 14 is no longer awarded there.

National team

With the Spanish national team , González won the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games and silver at the 1996 and 1998 European Championships . It was the first ever medal for the Spanish selection. He played 57 international matches in which he scored 55 goals.

Career as a coach

After his career ended in 2005, Raúl González became assistant coach of Talant Dujshebaev at BM Ciudad Real and his successor BM Atlético Madrid . After Madrid withdrew in the summer of 2013, he was without a club.

In January 2014 he took over the coaching position at the Macedonian club RK Vardar Skopje and signed until 2016. With Vardar he won the Macedonian Cup and the SEHA league in 2014 . In the EHF Champions League 2013/14 he eliminated the defending champion HSV Hamburg in the round of 16 , but then lost to SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the quarter-finals due to the away goals rule . In the 2016/17 season, RK Vardar Skopje won the EHF Champions League under his leadership. From March 2017 to February 2019, he also coached the Macedonian national team . Since the 2018/19 season he has coached the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain .
