Yuri Igorewitsch Nesterow ( Russian Юрий Игоревич Нестеров , born March 24, 1967 in Leningrad ) is a former Russian handball player who was mostly used as a runner .
The 2.06 m tall and 114 kg heavy right-handed player began playing handball in his hometown near Neva Leningrad . During his time in the army he played for CSKA Moscow , then he returned to Leningrad. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he moved to the Spanish league ASOBAL in 1991 with many other top Eastern European players . After two years at SDC San Antonio he was signed by the then top club Teka Santander . With Teka he won the Spanish championship and the EHF Champions League in 1993/94 . After only one season he joined Academia Octavio Vigo , with whom he lost to his former club in the 1994/95 King's Cup final. In the 1995/96 European Cup Winners' Cup he reached the second round and the semi-finals in the 1997/98 Euro City Cup . He then moved to the Portuguese Andebol 1 for ABC Braga , with whom he became champions in 1999 and 2001 and 2000 cup winners. In the EHF Cup 1999/2000 he reached the semi-finals and in the EHF Champions League 2000/01 he reached the quarter-finals. It should remain his last successes. After stints at SD Teucro and Bidasoa Irún , Nesterow, known as a tough defender, moved to the German Bundesliga club SC Magdeburg in February 2005 , but left the club a month later. Most recently he played at the lower-class Spanish clubs Porriño and Conservas Boya de Camariñas.
With the Soviet national team , Yuri Nesterov won the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games . At the 1990 World Cup he was defeated by the Swedish team in the final. Nesterow played 125 international matches .
In the run-up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Yuri Nesterov carried the Olympic torch through Saint Petersburg .
