Andebol 1 is the top division in Portuguese men's handball . The competition, which has been held since 1953, is organized by the Portuguese handball association Federação de Andebol de Portugal .

In the main round ( 1a phase ), the fourteen teams play the placements in the outward and second round, each against each other. The first eight reach the championship round ( phase final - group A ), the bottom six the relegation round ( phase final - group B ). The points from the main round are taken with them. Then within each group everyone plays again against everyone in home and away games. The two worst teams in Grupo B are relegated. The winner of Grupo A becomes Portuguese champion and qualifies for the EHF Champions League . The second and third placed teams are allowed to participate in the EHF Europe Cup and the fourth in the EHF Challenge Cup .
