Paul B. Steffen

Paul B. Steffen SVD (born October 19, 1954 in Leutesdorf am Rhein , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a Roman Catholic theologian, missiologist and professor of pastoral theology .

Life

At the beginning of 1962 his family moved to Andernach , where he continued his school education. Steffen studied practical theology from 1974 to 1977 at the Catholic University of Mainz with a degree in religious education, from 1977 to 1983 at the Philosophical-Theological University of the SVD in St. Augustin. From the end of 1983 to the beginning of 1987 Steffen worked in the parish pastoral care in the highlands of Papua New Guinea . From 1987 to 1992 Steffen did a licentiate and doctorate in missiology at the Pontifical Gregorian University of the Jesuits in Rome.

For 20 years Steffen has been teaching as a missiologist and pastoral theologian in Papua New Guinea, Germany, the Philippines and since 2002 as a professor at the Mission Studies Faculty (Istituti Affiliati in Missiologia) of the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. In August 2014 he was appointed associate professor and full holder of the chair for missionary pastoral theology. On March 1st, 2019 P. Steffen was appointed full professor.

As a practical theologian, he does research in contextual theology such as small Christian communities and pastoral institutes in Asia, Africa and Oceania as places of renewal and education that promote a participatory and relational approach in Christian communities and ministries. He also researches and publishes on the Papua New Guinea mission and church history, in particular on the missionaries of the Steyler missionaries and the Steyler missionary sisters on the mainland of New Guinea from 1896. He wrote numerous articles in the Biographisch-Bibliographisches Kirchenlexikon (BBKL)
