Michael Sievernich (born February 22, 1945 in Arnsburg near Lich , Hessen ) is a German Jesuit , Roman Catholic theologian and professor emeritus of pastoral theology .

Life

After graduating from high school in Cologne in 1965, Sievernich joined the Society of Jesus (SJ) as a novice . From 1967 to 1970 he studied philosophy at the Jesuit University of Philosophy in Munich with a Lic. Phil. ; it was followed in 1973 with his diploma in Catholic theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main . After a short study visit to the USA , Sievernich was ordained a priest in 1973 by Cardinal Hermann Volk . He completed postgraduate studies in Catholic theology at the Westphalian Wilhelms Universityin Münster . There he became a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Sauerlandia Münster in the Cartell Association of German Catholic Student Associations . Sievernich in 1982 at the University of Münster with the work of guilt and sin in the contemporary theology doctorate . The work received the award from the University of Münster.

After studying in Colombia , Sievernich completed his habilitation at the Sankt Georgen University of Applied Sciences in Frankfurt am Main and received the venia legendi for pastoral theology and religious education. From 1984, he worked as a private and received in 1988 a reputation as a professor of pastoral theology at the aforementioned Frankfurt University. He has held several visiting professorships in Latin America : Buenos Aires (1991, 1993) and Mexico City (1995). From 1996 to 2000 he was rector of the Sankt Georgen University of Applied Sciences in Frankfurt. In 2003 Michael Sievernich was offered the chair of pastoral theology at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and was dean of the Catholic theological faculty from 2006–2008. He was appointed honorary professor at the Sankt Georgen University of Applied Sciences.

Sievernich had been engaged in pastoral work since 1973 in the pastoral work, sermon, retreat and spiritual accompaniment. From 1977 to 1981 he was Subregens at the St. Georgen seminary in Frankfurt. He is a band philistine of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Gothia-Würzburg in the Cartell Association.

Sievernich was one of the speakers for the ARD program Das Wort zum Sonntag .

Sievernich has published numerous writings; His debates on liberation theology became particularly well known . His research focuses on: Christian social forms in the past and present, ritual and sacrament, urbanity and pastoral care, inculturation and intercultural theology, Ignatian spirituality and pastoral care, religion in the late modern era.

Michael Sievernich is the brother of the film producer Chris Sievernich and the museum director Gereon Sievernich .

In 1986 he was the mentor of Jorge Bergoglio's planned, but ultimately not pursued, doctoral thesis and maintained this acquaintance with today's Pope Francis during a visiting professorship in Argentina in the early 1990s.

In autumn 2015 he took part in the Synod of Bishops on Marriage and Family in the Vatican as a German-speaking advisor .
