Peter Joseph Rottmann (born April 9, 1799 in Simmern / Hunsrück ; † February 27, 1881 there ) was an important Hunsrück dialect poet and local politician.

Life

Rottmann was born during the French occupation as the only child of the bookbinder and local politician Johann Lorenz Rottmann and his second wife Maria Margarethe Koch. After attending the French local school in Simmern, he was a clerk for the French arrondissement administration in 1813 and 1814, then a clerk in the local mortgage office until 1819 and was then employed by the domain administration in Kirchberg until it was lifted in 1824.

Between 1817 and 1822 he wrote his first poem "Glückwunsch zum Namestag", which he dedicated to his fiancée Wilhelmine Maull, a doctor's daughter from Rhaunen. The couple married on February 12, 1822 and later had ten children.

After the end of his employment in the domain administration, Rottmann worked as a freelance legal consultant until 1845 and briefly ran the Gasthof Zum Hunsrück , today's Rottmann House, as the landlord in Simmern . During this time he wrote his first poems in the Hunsrück dialect , which he initially only passed on to friends. In 1840, at the suggestion of the Bonn poet Karl Joseph Simrock , Rottmann published his first book Poems in Hunsrück Dialect .

Rottmann was very happy to celebrate, loved the carnival and socializing and was never absent from any singing festival.

A double cataract operation carried out in Düsseldorf in 1877 enabled him to read and write until the end of his life.

Political career

Since 1833 in the Simmern city council, Rottmann was second alderman in 1842 and in 1843 sent to the Düsseldorf 7th Rhenish Provincial Parliament , where, among other things, a new municipal code was discussed. Due to his commitment and because of his general popularity, he was appointed mayor of the city and office of Simmern in 1846 against strong competition . Re-elected for twelve years in each case in 1850 and 1862, he held this office until 1870. He retired that year because of an eye condition.

Services

In his dialect poems, Rottmann primarily addresses the everyday life of the Hunsrückers in a humorous way. The occupation by initially French and later Prussian troops are also reflected in his works. In his estate there were some poems in High German, mostly with a patriotic content (“Willkommen den Heimkehrenden Kriegern”, “Die Deutschen Farben”), which were not published in print during his lifetime.

Awards

Rottmann was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV class in 1847 .
