Achim R. Baumgarten (born March 19, 1956 in Altweidelbach , Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis ) is a German archivist , regional historian and local politician .

Life

Achim Baumgarten was born in Altweidelbach in the Hunsrück in 1956. After attending elementary school and high school and two years of military service (1974–1976), he studied history and English at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In 1979/80 he spent a year abroad in Leytonstone / London. In 1982 he graduated with the first state examination and then did his doctorate with Konrad Fuchs with a thesis on witch hunt in the vicinity (1986). During this time he received a grant from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom .

From 1987 to 1989 Baumgarten completed a traineeship for the higher archives service at the State Main Archives Koblenz and the Archive School Marburg . Since 1989 he has worked at the Federal Archives .

Achim Baumgarten is married and has two grown daughters.

Baumgarten has been the editor of the Rhein-Hunsrück calendar since 2006, has been a member of the board of the Hunsrück History Association since 1994, has been the second chairman since 1996, and is responsible for the Hunsrück biography . As a local politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) he was a member of the city council between 1994 and 1999 and between 2009 and 2011 and a member of the Simmern / Hunsrück municipal council from 1994 to 2009 . From 2009 to 2019 he was a member of the district assembly of the Rhein-Hunsrück district . In 2011 he ran unsuccessfully as mayor of the Rheinböllen community because he was only able to gain 38.4% of the votes. Since 2019 he has been a member of the new Simmern-Rheinböllen municipal council (parliamentary group B90 / Greens) for the ÖDP.

Baumgarten's research work focuses on the Hunsrück region. He has published several publications and received awards.

Baumgarten was also involved in employee representation. From 1999 to 2008 and from 2012 to 2019 he was a member of the main staff council of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), from 1999 to 2003 as deputy chairman and from 2003 to 2004 as chairman, from 2016 to 2019 as a board member. He was a member of the local staff council at the Federal Archives from 2008 to 2019, and has been a board member since 2012. Since July 2019 he has been in the release phase of partial retirement.

Since 2010 he has been chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Schools and German Teaching in the States of Africa (VFOESDA eV).

Awards

  • On December 18, 2012, Achim Baumgarten received the badge of honor and the corresponding certificate from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for his many years of voluntary work , which was awarded to him by the state's prime minister.
  • On December 8, 2014, the city of Simmern awarded Achim Baumgarten the badge of honor for various services to the city of Simmern and the common good.
  • On June 7, 2019, Achim Baumgarten was named KLIO Honorary Chairman in recognition of his commitment to the interests of employees and 20 years of chairmanship of the KLIO employee representative.
  • For his many years of voluntary work as a member of the administrative board of the Kreissparkasse Rhein-Hunsrück, Achim Baumgarten received an honorary certificate on September 2, 2019 and the Dr. Johann Christian Eberle Medal of the Sparkasse Organization Rhineland-Palatinate.
