He was associated with the theater groups Nederlands Volkstoneel, Rotterdamse Comedie, Toneelgroep Studio, Toneelgroep Theater, Toneelgroep Centrum, Nieuw Rotterdams Toneel, Haagse Comedie and starred in several films and TV series. He was a member of the core group of actors of the Dutch Television Foundation. Culeman translated a play by the Austrian playwright Hermann Ortner .

Life

Culeman was born into a family of German theologians, the son of a German pastor and his wife, ACJE Culeman. His grandfather was a missionary in Sumatra . In 1934, Culeman Senior refused to take the oath on Nazi Germany. In 1936 the family fled to the Netherlands and acquired Dutch citizenship. Culeman Senior studied medicine and established himself as a doctor in Amsterdam .

Culeman worked for KLM for some time and completed the private course "Academy of Dramatic Art". After playing "Huis Clos" (Closed Society) with Jan Velzeboer, he was offered a contract with the Nederlands Volkstoneel in 1947. He played in "Op hoop van zegen" (Barend) and Maria Stuart (Mortimer) , among others . In the mid-1950s, Culeman began working for television as well.

In 1962 he was asked to play the role of SD officer Grundmann in “De Overval” (The Robbery). Culeman became well known in the Netherlands through his role as Maarten van Rossum in the popular 1969 television series Floris. In 1973 he had roles in several episodes of the drama series "Waaldrecht". In the episode “De ingreep” (The Intervention), which aired on April 24, 1973, he played the shipyard director Griensveen as a replacement for Henk Rigters, who had fallen ill. He was also seen in the episodes "Fakkels en De weg terug" (Torches and the way back) as Griensveen. According to then-television reviewer for the NRC Handelsblad , it was thanks in part to Culeman that Griensveen became the main character on the series.

At the age of 46, Culeman died of a heart attack in his dressing room during a performance of Jean Giraudoux's La Folle de Chaillot at the Haagse Schouwburg. He was buried in the Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery.
