Maarten van Rossum
Maarten van Rossum (also Marten and Rossem ; * around 1478 in Zaltbommel ; † June 7, 1555 in Antwerp ) was a Gelderland military leader who was feared outside his home country due to ruthless warfare.
Life
In a long career he has often put his motto "Blaken and Burn is the ornament of war" into practice. His way of waging war was comparable to that of the Italian condottieri . For thirty years he represented the interests of the Duke of Gelderland , Karl von Egmont , and his successor Wilhelm von Jülich-Kleve-Berg in their struggles for independence from Geldern and against the Burgundian Empire of Emperor Karl V.
Van Rossum is credited with a long list of achievements, including the conquest of Arnhem and Rhenen , raids in the county of Holland , the conquest of Utrecht and the sensational raid to The Hague in 1528. In the final phase of the Third War of the Geldr Succession , van Rossum began in 1542 his campaign for the Duchy of Brabant , as a result of which a considerable part of Brabant was burned down. In the battle for Antwerp he scored a victory over Rene von Chalon . However, his plan to conquer one of the four large cities in Brabant failed.
In 1543 van Rossum had the moated castle Kasteel De Cannenburgh built.
