Albin Edelhoff (born June 6, 1887 in Mengeringhausen ; † August 11, 1974 in Rhaunen ( Hunsrück )) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Live and act

Edelhoff was a flower, still life , landscape and portrait painter and graphic artist based in Cologne-Raderthal . He was trained in Berlin and Paris. During the First World War he served as a soldier on the western and eastern fronts. Unlike many of his artist colleagues, however, he did not process his war experiences in shocking, provocative depictions of the atrocities of war, such as Otto Dix , but wanted to please people with his pictures and distract them from the dreary everyday life after the war. After an expressionist phase, he turned to the " New Objectivity " and mainly created flower still lifes in oil. In 1937 he moved into the Yellow House at Faßbenderkaul 1, Cologne-Raderthal, which was a studio building for the city of Cologne. The artists Hubert Berke , Severin Düx , Heinrich Hoerle , Anton Hoch , Josef Mangold , Toni May , Irma Müller-Hermann , Hanns Rheindorf , C. Schreiber, Robert Seufert , P. H. Simon and Heinrich Von den Hoff also lived and worked here . During the National Socialist rule , Edelhoff limited himself to the then popular wood and linocut technique and portrayed German cities and landscapes.

Shortly after the Second World War , Edelhoff married the much younger music student Hildegard Blatt, who came from Rhaunen in the Hunsrück, in Cologne. In the meantime he had successfully tried his hand at watercolor painting and went on painter trips to Italy, North Africa, Greece and France. After further turbulent years in Cologne's artistic circles, the couple moved to Rhaunen in 1965 to look after Hildegard's mother. Edelhoff quickly got used to the sleepy Hunsrück village. The austere beauty of the landscape awakened new inspiration in him and reconciled with the loss of his Cologne circle.

In 1974 the artist, who had always remained consciously apolitical, died in Rhaunen, he is buried in the local cemetery.

He was a member of the Reich Association of German Artists .
