Toni May

Toni May (born December 4, 1914 in Cologne ; † November 19, 2004 there ) was a German painter.

Life

May was born in the southern part of Cologne in what was then the St. Agatha Hospital of the Cellites , Karthäuserhof. He remained connected to Vringsveedel in the south of the city for a long time, only moving to Cologne-Mülheim in the 1980s. The son of a stonemason completed an apprenticeship as a glass painter in 1929 . In 1933 he received a scholarship from Robert Seuffert at the Cologne factory schools . In 1940 he received a state scholarship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Junghans . He was a participant in the war and was taken prisoner by the French. During the war and in captivity, he painted over 5,000 field sketches with portraits of soldiers and prisoners of war. From 1946 May became a freelance artist with his own studio in Cologne.

He portrayed Cardinal Meisner , Hans Gerling (Gerling Group), Iwan David Herstatt (Herstatt Bank), Willy Millowitsch (actor), G. Finke (General Director Gothaer Insurance Bank) and Ferdinand Mülhens (4711 / Cologne Water Dynasty) ). Almost all of the works are privately owned; as a purely commissioned painter, there are only a few works by May in public collections today. These are located in the Cologne City Museum . He painted the backdrops for the amateur theater at Altermarkt-Spielkreis . One of his Cologne scene pictures, for example, is Rose Monday 1975 at Altermarkt .

His daughter Johanna May (* in the 1970s) is a singer, model and actress.
