Saint-Valérien is a French commune with 1681 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Yonne department in Burgundy in the fertile landscape of the Gâtinais . For the surrounding smaller municipalities, Saint-Valérien acts as a sub-center with a doctor, pharmacy, shops, etc. There is also a small business park. The old episcopal city of Sens is nearby .

geography

Built between the Orvanne and Lunain rivers , about a hundred kilometers southeast of Paris , Saint Valérien is located on the main road between Nemours and Sens , 15 kilometers from it.

history

Evidence of human culture within the current location or the immediate vicinity is very old and was proven by the discovery of tools from the Stone Age (Old, Middle and New Stone Age), especially near the source of the Orvanne.

At the beginning of the Christian era, the Romans passed through this street, which we still call "Chemin de César" today, and founded a settlement there, the remains of which still existed at the end of the 19th century.

The oldest surviving structure in Saint-Valérien is the church from the 12th and 13th centuries.

The castle was only built in the 18th century on the site of a former castle.

economy

The current village has around 1700 inhabitants including the surrounding hamlets. Most of the working population still finds work in small or medium-sized firms and in local industry; the main company is a school supplies factory. Retail is disadvantaged by the proximity of Sens and its supermarkets.

In the agricultural sector, livestock has almost disappeared. Grain cultivation and oil crops such as rape and sunflower have taken their place.

education

In addition to a preschool and a primary school, there is also a college with various sports facilities that accepts students from the canton of Chéroy from the 6th grade to the 9th grade.
