Villeneuve-sur-Yonne is a French commune with 5219 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Yonne department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . It is the capital of the canton of the same name Villeneuve-sur-Yonne .
geography
The city is located on the banks of the Yonne River between the towns of Joigny and Sens . It belonged to the former Burgundy region .
history
Villeneuve-sur-Yonne was founded in 1163 on the orders of King Louis VII as Villeneuve-le-Roi in order to better protect the borders of the Kingdom of France against the county of Champagne . A bridge was built over the Yonne and the city was built strictly square, with massive ramparts, based on the Roman model . Philip II , the son of King Louis VII, held parlement (royal court sessions) here in 1204 . Louis IX , the saint , resided here before embarking on the 7th Crusade , during which he died in Tunis . During the Wars of Religion , Villeneuve went up in flames in 1594 because the city had remained loyal to the Catholic League while Henry IV took power in Paris.
In the course of the French Revolution , the city was renamed from Villeneuve-le-Roi to Villeneuve-sur-Yonne in 1792.
1927-1935 Villeneuve-sur-Yonne was ruled by Marcel Petiot , who was executed in 1946 as a serial killer.
