It belongs to the Arrondissement of Sens and the canton of Thorigny-sur-Oreuse (until 2015: canton of Pont-sur-Yonne ). The inhabitants are called Michelins .

Michery is about 13 kilometers north-northwest of Sens . The Yonne River forms part of the western municipal boundary. Michery is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Serbonnes in the north and north-west, Sergines in the north, Plessis-Saint-Jean in the north-east, La Chapelle-sur-Oreuse in the east and south-east, Gisy-les-Nobles in the south, and Pont-sur-Yonne in the south-west as well as Villemanoche to the west.
