Joigny is a French commune with 9,580 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Yonne department , in the Bourgogne region ( Bourgogne-Franche-Comté ). It is the capital of the eponymous canton of Joigny and seat of the Communauté de communes du Jovinien .
geography
The city is located in the center of the Yonne department, on the banks of the Yonne river of the same name , 27 kilometers north of Auxerre , 30 kilometers south of Sens , 75 kilometers west of Troyes and 147 kilometers southeast of Paris . The Route Nationale N 6 runs through the city.
The municipalities of Villevallier , Villecien , Dixmont , Bussy-en-Othe , Saint-Aubin-sur-Yonne , Looze , Chamvres , Paroy-sur-Tholon , Champlay and Laroche-Saint-Cydroine border the city .
history
- The place was already settled in the Neolithic Age.
- During the Roman period it appears under the name Joviniacum on
- At the end of the 10th century a castle was built by Rainald the Elder , first Count of Joigny , and the city was officially founded in 996.
- In 1530 a fire ravaged the city, which only a few of the old wooden and half-timbered houses survived.
- After the French Revolution , Joigny became the headquarters of a sub-prefecture and was also a garrison town . Since 1927 it has only been the capital of the canton of the same name.
