Horní Bříza (German Ober Birken ) is a city in the Czech Republic . It is located 15 kilometers north of Pilsen and belongs to the Okres Plzeň sever .

geography

The city is located in the southwestern foothills of the Rakonitzer hill country on the left bank of the Bělá along its tributary Bílý Potok. It is surrounded by forest areas in which a larger open-cast kaolin is operated.

Neighboring towns are Kaznějov in the north, Obora in the northeast, Býkov and Hromnice in the east, Česká Bříza and Třemošná in the southeast, Záluží in the south, Ledce in the southeast, Žilov and Tatiná in the west and Trnová in the northwest.

history

The first mention of the village of Březí comes from the year 1180. At the end of the 14th century, on the right of the Bělá, the village of Schirme (Čermná) was established. In the course of time, the villages had a large number of owners and, in 1848, after the replacement of patrimonial rule, they united to form the municipality of Hořejší Březí. Until then, the place was meaningless and its inhabitants lived from agriculture.

The boom began in the middle of the 19th century with coal mining near the one-layer Čabalky in the north of the village and the establishment of the vitriol and sulfuric acid factory Pod Horami. In 1865 a fire destroyed large parts of the village. When the railway from Pilsen to Podersam was built between 1871 and 1873 , it still passed the village.

In 1882 a large kaolin deposit was discovered in the forests north of Ober Birken and the industrial and mining entrepreneur Johann Fitz built a sludge plant for kaolin. In 1885 Fitz founded a ceramics factory, which in 1899 became part of West Bohemian Kaolin and Chamotte Works. In 1893 the village received a railway connection.

Horní Bříza has been a town since 1994. The kaolin mining industry still dominates and the Horní Bříza ceramics company is the largest company in town.
