Craft
In Germany the craft since the 15th century guild moderately exercised. The craftsmen at that time were known as " drills " or " baliers ". Today this trade is a three-year teaching and training occupation.
Centers
In Germany, Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the centers for the processing of precious stones. There are large deposits of agate, which is extracted in mining, which is why the gemstone cutting was operated there on an industrial scale. There is the "German Gemstone Museum" in the village. There used to be gemstone cutting shops in Freiburg and Waldkirch .
In Europe, Antwerp , whose traditionally predominantly Jewish traders are supposed to handle around 2/3 of the world diamond trade, is considered to be the center of this craft, although a huge change in the diamond trade has taken place here in recent years: Jain Indians dominate 55 percent of the global diamond business and Asia is gaining more and more importance as a production and processing location (back).
