The Keller Stausee (Keller See) is a reservoir near Kell am See in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and is located just under 30 km southeast of Trier and just under 20 km west of Hermeskeil in the Hunsrück in Rhineland-Palatinate .
The 13 hectare reservoir is a local recreation area and an attraction for vacationers and day visitors. It is located in the middle of a natural landscape near Kell am See. There is a circular path around the lake that is not allowed to be used. The lake consists of a shallow and a deep area. The flat part between the holiday park and the Fronhof riding stables is 0.5 to 4 meters deep. The other area between the boathouse, Castel am See and the dam is up to twelve meters deep.
Existing bans are a bathing ban, a driving ban with private boats (pedal boats can, however, be rented) as well as a ban on walking on ice surfaces.
A holiday park ( Landal GreenParks ), the Seehotel and a restaurant are located directly on the lake . There is an open-air swimming pool right next to the Kell am See spa and holiday center.
The dam is a 15 m high earth dam and dams the Lehbach and Ellersbach .
In 2011, the lake was also the venue for the German Barefoot Water Ski Championships, which took place as part of the Keller Kirmes.
History of origin
The "Hochwald recreation area" association, founded in 1967, promoted the development of the recreation area. In this context, the planning of the lake began in 1969. The reservoir was created within a few years and in 1979 Kell am See received the certificate of a state-recognized health resort .
