Rhynocoris cuspidatus is a black and reddish brown colored bug species from the family of predatory bugs (Reduviidae).
Distribution and habitats
The distribution area of the bug species is in the Mediterranean and extends from the Iberian Peninsula to Asia Minor . The adult animals can be found predominantly in the herb layer . Their typical habitat is formed by field borders , pastures, meadows and forest edges. The nymphs, on the other hand, stay almost exclusively on the ground and can be found under stones, dead wood , in plant cushions or in the loose litter.
features
The bugs of the species Rhynocoris cuspidatus reach body lengths between 10 and 12 millimeters. They are big and strong and show a variable black-red-brown pattern. The head and antennae are black. The strong trunk (rostrum) is red-brown and has a black tip. The scutellum is black. The pronotum is black with a reddish brown center. The corium and cuneus of the fore wings ( hemielytres ) are reddish brown, while the clavus and membrane are black. The corners of the pronotum and the tip of the scutellum are outlined in white. The legs are striped black and reddish brown. The connexive (part of the abdomen visible on the side) is black with white spots.
Way of life
The animals feed exclusively on various insects in a predatory manner. The prey is quickly killed and sucked out by a sting that is also painful for humans. The adults can be seen from May to August. The larvae go through five stages.
